Chapter Twenty-Two

TS was nowhere to be found when I got home. Nobody seemed to know where he’d gone. I’d sent him at least ten texts asking if he was okay—telling him I was sorry. All of them had gone unanswered, likely unread, too. He was clearly still mad at how I’d fucked up once again.

My heart had been in the right place. My actions, however, had fallen short.

With a lump in my stomach, I bypassed breakfast and settled for a cup of coffee instead. The Fates were quietly looming in the kitchen, none of them saying a word beyond a simple hello. Whether they were disappointed in me too, or too scared to upset the shrew, I wasn’t sure, but I enjoyed the quiet regardless. It was a welcome change.

Then Zale made his way over to the table, and I braced myself for whatever haunting phrase was sure to follow. But none came. He just sat there, staring at me with a sadness in his eyes that made my heart hurt even worse.

“It’s not your fault,” he said softly over the rim of his mug.

“Yeah, not so sure TS feels the same about that, Zale—or me either, for that matter.”

“You cannot make sound decisions without all the facts,” he continued. “You thought he was in danger—and any of the rest of us would have been in that same scenario. It’s not your fault that you didn’t know he can touch the tome and be unaffected.”

“Say what now?” I said, nearly spitting out my coffee. I wiped a drop from my chin and put the cup down as I leaned closer to my soft-spoken uncle. “Are you telling me that he really could have destroyed it by himself and this mess would all be over?”

He nodded. “Provided he does indeed have the strength to do so, yes.”

“Motherfucker,” I growled under my breath. “So now the book is still out there with a nameless ghost?” Everyone’s expressions were grim. “Now’s hardly the time to hold back, you guys. Just tell me the deal.”

“We don’t know for certain,” Ferris said. “But knowing how the tome works, we can only assume that it’s looking for a master.”

“Great…”

“But it has been destroyed before,” he added quickly. “I have no doubt that your father and TS will find a way to do it again.”

“What I don’t understand is how it exists at all if it was wiped from the face of the Earth,” I said, standing to pace the room. Zale, sensing my unease, soon joined me, circling the room in silence at my side. “And who is this rogue ghost who has it? Maybe if we can figure that out, we’ll know where it might pop up again.”

“Only you can figure that out,” Cy said with a shrug. “We can’t see the dead.”

“Right, but what being would have the ability to call forth something that had been eradicated and disposed of?”

“TS would be of more assistance in that matter,” Muses drawled as he sauntered into the kitchen.
